Saunas
How does a sauna work?
A sauna is a small room heated to between 70°C and 100°C. At JD Gyms the heat is generated by an electric heater, which warms the air and raises your body temperature.
As your body heats up, your heart rate rises, your blood vessels dilate and you begin to sweat, producing the same physiological response as moderate exercise. Your body is working hard, even when you're sitting still.
Humidity levels vary depending on the type of sauna. A traditional dry sauna (like the ones at JD Gyms) has low humidity, meaning the heat feels intense but not heavy.
What are the benefits?
-
Muscle recovery
Spending a few minutes in the sauna after your session isn't just a nice way to wind down, it's one of the easiest things you can do for your body.
-
Relaxation
The heat triggers the release of endorphins and promotes deep muscle relaxation. A 10–15 minute session after training can help your body, and your mind, properly switch off.
-
Improved circulation
As blood vessels dilate in the heat, circulation improves throughout the body. Regular sauna use has been linked to better cardiovascular health over time.
-
Stress relief
Cortisol levels tend to drop in the sauna. The enforced stillness doesn't hurt either. No phone, no notifications, just heat.
